What will keep me warmer, a down jacket or a synthetic jacket?
Whilst down has long been the go-to choice for ultimate warmth - recent synthetic options have significantly closed the gap. Broadly speaking a high-loft down insulated jacket will still beat-out a comparable synthetic option. What is the best method to care for my women's outdoor clothing?
In short: If you look after your outdoor clothing, it will last longer. All clothes should have a label, sewn inside, this will have basic instructions about washing and caring for the garment. Look for symbols that indicate if you should machine or hand wash, use hot or cold water, tumble dry or not, etc. As a rule of thumb: a cold machine wash, on a gentle setting, with a mild detergent and air drying is a good starting point for most garments. But if you’re unsure always confirm before washing. Some technical garments, such as jackets with waterproof membranes will require special care. When cleaning Gore-Tex 3-layer Waterproof jackets and other waterproof fabrics, we recommend a specialised cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash which will protect the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment of the garment.
What type of fabrics should I look for in my women's hiking clothing?
In general hiking, clothing will combine temperature regulation and moisture-wicking properties but also be lightweight and durable. The fabrics used are usually either a synthetic or natural fibre, or a blend of both. If you’re undertaking high-exertion activities like running and climbing mountains, moisture-wicking clothing will be essential to regulate your temperature effectively. Look for synthetics that are optimised to move sweat away from your body and dry quickly. Garments constructed from merino wool, such as the Icebreaker clothing range, are also a good option for longer trips. Not only are they warm and highly breathable, but merino is naturally antimicrobial and odour resistant!
